They released a number of 7” singles and EPs, added a bassist, and gigged extensively, playing alongside many of their minstrelling heroes including Deerhoof, NEU!’s Michael Rother, A Place To Bury Strangers and the late Grant Hart of Husker Du. Percolator started in Waterford in 2007 as a drum and guitar duo mainly influenced by the electro infused noise pop and shoegaze bands of the 80’s and 90’s. This dynamic record of eddies and swirls, ravishing melodies, hallucinatory textures and bonkers rhythms is pinned down by some deft performances: Pilkington’s picture-perfect pop and earthy singing, Davies’ blazing harp splutterations and guitar moans, Bothwell’s twisted telephone techno and bamboozling lyric-bombs and Dawson’s utter bass. Mogic is a discombobulating pop prayer exploring artificial intelligence, witches, nanotechnology, pre-medieval history, robots, romance, computer games and waterfalls. Revelation takes time.” – SoundblabĮach hailing from historically different tribal regions of the Old North, the musicians on Mogic challenge the idea that the ancient world was rife with magic, while the new is infiltrated by cold logic. There are so many wonderful nuances in this music. But, truly, give this one a lot of attention. “this is a weird record that circles history with an odd coil of sounds. Due to efficient photosynthetic capability, robust growth, and clear genetic background, cyanobacteria are recently used for production of different biofuel and biochemical molecules by genetic engineering and showed great potentials as the next-generation microbial cell factory.A band project comprising Richard Dawson, Rhodri Davies, Dawn Bothwell and Sally Pilkington, Hen Ogledd’s meaning comes from the Welsh name for The Old North. For improving the production of bio-products, a number of genetic modifications are important for cyanobacteria. However, the system-level genetic modification of cyanobacteria is limited by the lack of efficient method for marker recycling. In this investigation, we introduced the self-replicable shutter vectors harboring the flipase (FLP) gene from Saccharomyces cerevisiae into two mutants of Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 and Synechococcus elongatus PCC7942 whose genomes were inserted by a kanamycin resistance gene with flipase recombination target (FRT) flanking, respectively. ![]() Transcriptional analysis by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction showed that FLP gene was transcripted in both the two cyanobacterial strains. Genotyping analysis indicated that FLP performed its function in vivo in both two cyanobacterial strains, and the following DNA sequencing analysis on the targeted loci further confirmed that FLP exactly excised and ligated the two FRT sites between which a kanamycin resistance gene is located. The homozygous mutants free of the kanamycin resistance gene cassette were obtained by conditional expression of FLP and further dilution plating. ![]()
